Reiki

A Form of Hands on Healingpeg

Reiki is a holistic therapy for stress reduction and relaxation that, as a result, can help promote healing. It is considered energy work while addressing both physical and emotional discomfort and facilitating a feeling of balance. It is calming and effective for all ages and is safe to use in conjunction with medications and medical conditions. If you are ready to relax and renew your sense of well-being, Reiki can help.

Similar to a meditation or yoga routine, used on a regular basis, Reiki can be effective in keeping the body and mind in harmony. It should be understood to be a “maintenance” therapy rather than as a “cure”. It is common knowledge that if the human body is well maintained, the likelihood and effect of disease, depression, etc. can be reduced.

During the reiki treatment you relax, fully clothed, on a massage table, chair, bed, or sofa while the practitioner holds her hands on or above you. People who receive Reiki often feel heat or tingling from the practitioner’s hands and/or a sense of deep relaxation.

Reiki may assist in the management of:

Mental Illness or Distress

Feeling Unbalanced or Out of Focus

Pain, Physical Illness or Injury

Emotional Blockages

Weak Immune System

Post-Operative Healing

Sleeping Disorders

and more!

 Common Question about Reiki

This ancient Japanese healing art is a familiar and accepted treatment today. Reiki is a safe, gentle and non-invasive treatment and is not aligned with a specific religion. This holistic treatment promotes and stimulates the body’s own healing system, similar to when you have a cut on your finger and your body goes into action to heal the skin, or a broken bone. Reiki is a gentle form of healing.  As a Reiki practitioner I do not manipulate, diagnose, or prescribe medication. The energy that flows from my hands always works towards the highest good for both of us.  It is therefore completely safe and can be used to compliment any other medical or alternative therapy.

Is Reiki a religion? This is a very common question. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is NOT a religion.  It has no dogma and is not dependent on any belief system.  Just like you don’t need to have a particular belief system to receive acupuncture, a therapeutic massage or a chiropractic adjustment, you will not need a particular belief system for Reiki.  You just need to be open to receiving the benefits. Sometimes to understand something you must actually experience it because words often do not do it justice.  Most natural or holistic therapies are like this.  You may not understand how your acupuncture or chiropractor session worked, but you felt great the next day. Reiki certainly falls into this same category.

What does Reiki feel like? Clients can expect to experience a wide range of feelings during their session.  Reiki can feel warm and profoundly relaxing. You may feel my hands become hot or tingly. Some people describe a floating sensation and some see colors, shapes, lights, memories, or visions during the session. Some experience tingling, waves of energy, hot or cold temperature changes, and just feels very relaxed. Some people fall asleep. Some experience emotional release, both negative and positive.  In addition, many describe a wonderful, glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy allows them to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear and other negative feelings, a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Whatever one’s personal experience is, it will be unique.  Each treatment can be completely different and can change as you change.  There is no one “expected experience” — Reiki treatment is unique for each individual who receives it.

What should I wear to a Reiki Session? You are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing, remove glasses, shoes and unnecessary heavy jewelry. Since you remain fully clothed it is important for you to be completely comfortable. I also ask that you leave you cell phone and other electronic devices off so there are no interruptions during your session.

Does it ever hurt to receive Reiki? Rarely, but remember that Reiki energy is healing. Emotionally speaking, if the Reiki energy is helping you release a blocked emotional pain, such as deep anger, resentment, or hurt, you may experience that emotion again, briefly, as it is released. But then you should feel better and it can help you cope with that buried emotion. Physically speaking, some people may experience a brief sensation during treatment and some relief while the Reiki energy is penetrating and releasing the physical pain. This can be true when there has been a burn, for example, or an injury that caused a sharp pain at the time of injury. Usually, though, Reiki is a painless way to relieve emotional and physical pain. It feels very soothing, warm, and relaxing. Reiki is NOT harmful in any way, and is only going to complement you efforts in improving your health and overall well-being.

Are there any side effects from a Reiki treatment? Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis, particularly when there is an emotional release. As a person responds to Reiki, it is possible that toxins and emotional energy that have been stored in the body will be released and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak for a short time. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat a light meal and get some rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign and usually passes very quickly.

Does Reiki take the place of medical or professional treatment? While Reiki is a professional treatment, it should never be seen as a substitute for licensed medical care. Reiki is a complementary therapy that can assist in your healing process as well as help improve your physical and mental health.  Reiki works in conjunction with regular medical and/or psychological treatment. If you have a medical or psychological condition, it is highly recommended you see a licensed health care professional in addition to receiving Reiki treatments. Reiki energy works in harmony with other forms of healing, including drugs, surgery, psychological care, and other methods of alternative care. See your physician(s) regularly and keep him/her informed of any change in your condition(s).  Never stop taking prescriptions or treatments without consulting with your physician first. Keep your physician informed of all your complimentary health care plans and/or interests.

Can Reiki “cure” me? Reiki is not a “cure’.  Reiki is a treatment that works well alone as well as in concert with other treatments. Healing is often the result of gentle shifts in awareness, release of emotional patterns, and achievement of new understandings.  Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment.  No promises can be made about the outcome of the use of Reiki (or any other healing system, for that matter). It all depends on you, your intent, your background, and the nature of your problem. Reiki is a different experience for everyone and has different effects on every individual.

What are the benefits of multiple Reiki sessions? Just like meditation or movement arts, the effects of Reiki are cumulative. While one session can work wonders; repeated, regular Reiki treatments can invite significant improvement. As an example: if you exercise for an hour, you will receive benefit. If you exercise every day for a month, the results will be much more profound. Reiki works similarly – regular sessions support well-being in every way.

Should I receive Reiki when I have no apparent physical or emotional issues? Yes, there are always underlying factors that we may not see or feel the surface. I highly recommend experiencing Reiki on a regular basis for general well-being and overall preventative health. Many people use Reiki to help maintain low blood pressure, for better sleep, as relaxation and other preventative measures; in the same way they would maintain their diet, exercise and meditation routines.

What do I feel when giving a Reiki treatment? As the practitioner, I feel the Reiki energy flowing through my hands.  Sometimes I feel hot or cold, and sometimes I feel motion, tingles, and/or vibrations.  Sometimes I sense the activity on a more intuitive level.  Reiki energy is channeled through me before leaving through the hands and flowing into the client.  Because of this, I receive a partial Reiki treatment for every treatment given (YAY!!!!).  As a result, I will become very relaxed and may become connected to the client on an energetic level.  This allows me to modify the treatment on an intuitive level to provide exactly what the client needs most.  Sometimes, this will also cause me to receive useful insights about what the client needs to know to heal more completely.

Can I receive Reiki during Cancer Treatments? Yes. We are seeing more and more complimentary care practices at Cancer Centers, local hospitals and Hospices. Physicians, Nurses and researchers are recognizing the benefits of relaxation and healing support that can take place during Reiki sessions and the positive affect it can have on patients. Some examples that have been documented are; less pain, less pain medication needed, a feeling of comfort, clarity in decision making, spiritual connection, less nausea and feeling more “normal” after treatments. Reiki should be used only as a compliment to your physician treatment plan and is not meant to replace any physician directives.

Can Reiki help someone with a terminal illness? From personal experience, when I work with people with terminal illnesses, they often find that Reiki helps them to feel calm and relaxed, and enables them to prepare for death themselves and with their families.

Is Reiki safe for babies and pregnant women? Yes.  Babies love Reiki, and it is as beneficial for them as it is for Mom!

Is Reiki safe for animals? Animals have a natural understanding and instinct for healing, so they often respond to Reiki and its benefits.  Animals often know exactly where Reiki is needed, and they will position themselves so the hands are exactly where they want the treatment.  They also know when they have received enough, and they will often wander off in the middle of a session when they are done.  This is normal and expected.
